The 'crest' is the topline of the horses neck. When you do a crest release you are releasing your hands over the jump to the 'crest'. A long crest release is a release that is higher up the horses neck than you would usually do. An automatic release is the automatic response to jumping; just releasing the horse enough to allow it to jump

its when you release over a jump. you push your hands down into the 'crest' of the neck.

A crest release is where you push your hands up the horse's neck or "crest" over the jump. Usually for beginner or intermediate riders.
An automatic release is when you have your hands further down and kind of by the horses shoulder. This release is more difficult and is for advanced riders.
