No I think its better for the, because they don't have the weight of the saddle on them, and you really have to absorb the horses body to sit the gaits and keep balance. I think its great! You also have to have a bond and a lot of trust with your horse to do bareback.

Yes the first time I got bucked off, I wouldn't even touch my horse, cause I was breaking him in (my first horse) I wouldn't even go into the field. Now we have the best bond, and the second time he bucked me off I just laughed and got back on :)

He has this thing that when he is in his stall. He puts his ears back an tries to bit people and stuff ( he's a rescue but i don't know if that has anything to so with it) but he is fine when he is out and I go in his stall all the time to clean it out with him in there. I am more mad with the people who dint pay any attention to him and call him mean or vicious and say that he just lifted his leg to kick me... No he didn't he's lifting it so I can pick dirt out (he lifts all his legs up for me right when I set down the last one and some bozo thought he was gonna kick me) haha it just makes me mad. Again, there are a whole lot. I'd say the dumbest thing we did (on the part of everyone involved) was when I was 11ish and was allowed to go to the Arab farm across the street with my friends and groom all of the horses and just play with them. I saw the owner leading the horses around by just leadropes looped around their neck with the snap clipped around the rope to make a loop, so my 11 year old self figured that it was fine to tie them up like that as well since I only had one halter. Well, let's just say that the horse pulled back and started hanging herself, everyone was freaking the f**k out and sobbing, and THANK GOD, a couple of nice joggers came by and helped us get her undone. She was okay. I feel so fricken stupid to this day for doing that, even though the whole situation was terribly irresponsible on the owner of the farm's part as well, and to some extent was also irresponsible of my parents (though in their defense they knew nothing about horses at the time).

Oh gosh, I went to my 4-H levels test and he would not calm down. I was like 13 and the levels instructor was screaming at me to LOPE, LOPE and (at least I felt like) he was just running blindly around the ring. I had zero control and needless to say, lost my test.

No, not usually. The purpose of a saddle is to distribute a rider's weight more evenly over the horse's back, and to help the rider balance. It is meant to provide comfort to both horse and rider. However, bareback riding when the rider has a soft and balanced seat should not hurt the horse. If the rider is unbalanced and hard on the horses back, this might hurt the horse. A rough, unbalanced seat is less likely to hurt the horse if there is a saddle involved (though it still could).



4) what is your most embarrassing horse related moment?

I was in the warm up arena at a show, taking Rags over a practice course of jumps. The course was fine until the last fence. It was less than graceful. Rags almost refused but decided to deer-jump this 4' fence at the last second. We landed badly off the last fence and I fell. I wasn't hurt but there were a lot of people watching and my riding instructor was laughing at our ridiculous form.

I decided to mount my grandfather's OTTB bareback and bridleless.. and helmetless... before she had been retrained for pleasure. She took off full speed and as soon as she took a turn I fell off. Again, I wasn't hurt but it was really stupid of me and I could have been hurt.

Rags has done many things to make me mad, including bite me (in the butt), destroy a brand new blanket in less than 24 hours, pee in the barn aisle and splash it all over my shoes and all over himself (he's done this more than once), get very dirty the night before a show, even though I left him in a clean stall with leg wraps, hood and a sheet that evening (he seriously gets poo stuffed in the eye holes of his sheet because he uses his poo as a pillow at night), and buck my fiance off. But despite all of his deviant behavior, I love him most!

4) When the horse I was riding refused an oxer and, after my foot came out of my right iron and I was barely hanging on from the left side, hugging her neck, she changed her mind and jumped from a stand-still. I stayed on and pulled myself back into the saddle as she was trotting away, though, so technically in show it wouldn't have counted as a refusal or fall, so it wasn't all embarrassing I guess...still an awkward ride, though.

7) Never a horse that I STAYED afraid of. The one that comes to mind didn't scare me so much as intimidate me if that makes sense. I handled him all the time, and got pretty comfortable with him, but the first few times I worked with him I didn't have the best time.

In addition, I think an advanced rider has to do more than just know how to ride; you have to know how to maintain your horse, the barn, the equipment. 10) He broke a peppertree...I was very little (maybe 10) and took him to the new arena. He saw the baby peppertree and locked onto it as we were trotting, and snapped the trunk. I felt awful, but looking back on it is pretty funny.
