I have a 14.2 cob which i have had for bout 6mths, he was't fit and was fat whn i bought him, he now is a bit fitter and has lost some of the weight. Now my dad would like to get another horse so we can hack out together, which breed would be best suited. He can be a plodder if you let him get away with it, and a bit spooky when hes being daft. I regually hack him out with a sections D, New forest, Arab and ID x, and he is gd but occasionally can be competitive especially with the section d and pull me but other than that hes a vry gd boy.

how about an Irish draught ,or another cob, they are both sturdy and do well under foot, you don't say what height or build your dad is,a lot depends on the weight and build of some one to what type of horse they can have.is your dad an experienced rider like you?.maybe you should take your dad to a few yards with horses for sale, and see if any take his fancy, and he could ride them to try them out,i like the sure footed horses my self, like the cob family and the Irish draught,i also like the new forest pony i have one i show in hand and hes great but hes only 14.2 but he is great,i have to Thoroughbred eventers my self as well and they are highly strung so i would stay away from the full bred Arabs and thoroughbreds maybe a cross with the draught or cob.hope he fins the horse he wants

I had a Sec D mare. She was hacked out with Sec D's, ID x TB, Arabs. Personally i would go for anything you have mentioned they all hack out well together.

Funnily enough i hacked out with another Sec D only once. This Sec D was a 6yr gelding mine was a 27yr Mare. Instantly she switched from the plodder to the competitive mare i had not seen in her for years, I had trouble holding her back!

She only behaved like that with her own kind never with the others.

Oh and Arabs can be a bit skittish...the Arab i used to hack with used to jump over puddles a horrible habit mine tried to pick up

to boot to what delta_dawn has already pronounced, a horse halter is built no longer in elementary terms to extra healthful a horse with an prolonged head, yet a horse that still has extra intensity around the throatlatch and a larger bone shape in the nostril. think of of a cobb (super pony) sized halter as being an in-between length between a small pony and usually used horse length. thinking of that, a cobb sized halter in many cases fits a pony from 12 palms by way of 14.2 (horse length). As delta-break of day has already stated, they are additionally very usuable for Arabs and usually plenty low-fee than procuring a halter it is particular for an Arab.

I'd say an irish draught - I don't know how tall or heavy your dad (no offence - my boyfriend is 6ft, 13.5stone but not fat), but irish draughts have fantstic tempraments - I used to look after a couple of big 17.2 ID's when I was younger and they were great! I'm also hoping to put my TB mare in foal to irish draught to get a half sensible horse to play with, as well as his nutty mum!

I would not go with an arab. They can be very high spirited and spooky. It's just how they are. I agree with a QH. Most of the time they are VERY laid back, sometimes lazy.

I would get a horse larger than him. Not hugley larger like 17.1 h. I mean like 15- 16.2 hh. Also, try finding a horse that is VERY VERY laid back. Then when they become friends, your cob will find confidence in your other horse and will not spook as much because it will see your other new horse won't. Hope this helps!

It doesn't really matter what breed you get. Just go look at anything that sounds like it might do the job and take it from there. You have to take into consideration your dad's height, weight and riding experience.

Good Luck

An Irish Draft..They are versatile horses and often appear to have a high degree of common sense...They can stand between anything from 15.3-17hh...I have one myself and he's a true gent wouldn't be without him.....

Arabians are always used to better a breed. They have great endurance. Would make a good mix, especially for eventing.

I suppose you should just get something quiet and not spooky. A quarter horse or tennessee walker might be good.
