When I head home after a long ride my horse speeds up and hard to hold back no matter how far away we are?

It does not matter if he has been trailered to the location, new mountain ranges, short or long distances he knows when we are heading home or to the trailer and hard to hold back and at an uncomfortable speed expecially high in the mountains.

Your horse is barn sour which is one of the more difficult things to fix. Might need a trainer for this one if you don't know how to train this out yourself.

I like to call this BARN SOUR!!! ha ha ha, well, maybe home sour, I used to have a few horses that we like that all the time and so what I did was for the first few times I attempted to hold them back, when I realized that wasn't working for them, or for me, I decided that I would run them back to my starting location and then when I reached it, I would keep them going, running past it, and after a few times of doing that they realized that we were going to be heading back when I said so and that it didn't matter if we were heading in the home direction or not, we may not be going back, I haven't had any issues with my horses trying to hurry home anymore, but again, those are my horses and that's what worked for them. Sometimes spinning your horse in a circle every time they start to pick up their pace will slow them down a bit and make them stop, but I hope you find something that works for you and your horse.

I had a horse that did the same thing. I would make her turn a circle when she got too fast, and have her stand facing the opposite direction. If she got nasty about it I would turn her around and walk her AWAY from home. This sends the message that if she behaved then she would go home, but at MY pace not hers. She figured it out after a little while. Good luck!

lots and lots of circles! i had a horse that did this and she got really ticked off when i did this and she learned that she hated circles more than she hated not going full speed twords home. also make her walk in the other direction

let him spin in circles. your strength vs. his strength. he is going to win. but him on a circle, he won't be going anywhere HA! and you will be the winner and he will learn when he wants to run home, it will take LONGER than walking at your decided pace.
