I have been riding for about 16 years now but not always consistently. There have been big spans of time where I didn't take lessons. This year, I decided that I would begin (and not stop) taking lessons again, consistently. Man, did I get into some bad habits without an instructor. Since then, I take a dressage lesson from a certified (US) instructor for $30 per hour with the barn owner and her daughter...sometimes with just one of them and sometimes alone. I take jumping lessons from a lady my age who completed through A in pony club. I pay her $30 also and ride either alone or with one other girl. Both instructors are excellent, the best I've had.
Of course both of these trainers come out to the barn...and are cheaper as I do not have to pay more for the horse, barn, etc. A year ago, when I rode at a riding academy nearby, I paid $220/mo. for 1 lesson/wk.
I have such a better deal now and am back at my home barn where the owner picks a horse for me for a "project," which I am usually, virtually its sole rider, indefinately, until something comes up--she needs me on another horse, the horse is being sold, etc...plus they have a HUGE covered arena. I have become so spoiled there. I went out to my dressage instructor's barn a few weeks ago...ugh...I was sweating like crazy (I live in the south, and it is HOT)! ...so spoiled & lucky to have great horse friends!! : )
