I'm having a 16hh 5yo Trekhena x Oldenburg vetted today I only have one concern and that is that he is very very long backed. I didn't notice it untill I saw the video of me riding him there is alot behind the saddle, he is underweight so that probibly makes him look longer as he isn't round at the moment. I'm 5'3" so quite short although I do have long legs for my height I looked ok on him but obviously he still has some growing to do. How big to you think he'll grow to and do you think the length of his back will cause any problems? Also do you think he gets it from tha oldenburg side or trekhena? I've looked up on both breeds and it seems as though its more trekhena as oldenburgs are the larger boned heavier warmblood. Any info would be a great help. Ta xx

Tha back should not be a problem at all but an advantage as it has a strong back on both sides. Now that's a bloodline cross I would LOVE to have, nice one! I reckon he'll hit 16hh, easily. Gonna be one champion jumper, if that's what you're into.

Trakeners and oldenburgs are both great breeds, but I think you're right to be concerned about the long back. Obviously make sure your saddle fits and that the horse doesn't have a history of back problems first, but after that I would suggest asking a vet and an instructor about the horse's likelyhood of developing back problems. Neither breed has an especially long back, so I'm guessing that his is just a fluke of breeding.

Ask the vet for his opinion, because its very difficult to say without looking at the horse. They do all develop slightly differently. If he's still lanky looking he might make another couple of inches, plus he has to fill out.

Ask the vet if he thinks his long back will interfere with his soundness, especially if you intend to jump.

(its trakehner).
