Oh - how I hate the word whip! A riding crop is used as an aid to strengthen the leg aids. That is, being just a tap. If I saw you or anyone else using a whip, I would report you. If your donkey can't run on sand - so be it.......how old is he? what feed is he having? is he only used to pull a small cart? Is he in regular exercise? From where I'm sitting, my heart really goes out to your little donkey. Taking part is the fun of this race. There will be a lot of shouting, legs and arm flapping - what's the point of whipping him just to win? How will you feel if you won purely by whipping? You will feel even worse (if you have a heart) if he doesn't win and you have whipped him. I wish you luck in the race, but think about your donkey FIRST.............He's been born to serve, not to be punished.

Donkey's are notoriously stubborn and i doubt if whipping will make any difference!! If its anything like the Donkey Derby's I've ridden in, you will be concentrating on staying on and the most naturally forward going donkey will win!

1st lesion. show the donkey what you want. Run like the wind around him.
2nd lesion. Get a really nice strong whip and beat yourself on the rear end as hard as you can (better still get some one else to do this, the tendency is to not really hit yourself that hard) Tell the donkey this is what will happen if he doesn't run.
3rd lesion. encourage your donkey to get up of the floor (donkeys have a good sense of humour too and he will be rolling around laughing).
4th lesion put everyone out of their mystery and tell them you are only kidding!

Whipping is an art - I use a crop on my mare when we are jumping, but it is one hit about two strides from the jump and half the time I end up hitting myself or the saddle pad. With horse racing, the whip is used for specific purposes and good jockeys don't just take the whip to the horse - they do it as specific times.
You need to talk to a trainer and practice to understand where whipping is needed - to much and ornery donkey will stop and have a 'discussion' with you about manners.

don't use spurs they hurt the animal more than a whip. spurs make the animal mad but they work. most of the time you have to whip the horse in almost a middle speed. sometimes they will go just with a little tap. beware if you are stoped and the donkey doesn't know you are going to whip it it will start off so fast you would probably fall off.

You shouldnt need a crop or spurs on a donkey!
Just give him a tight squeeze and dont let go until he gos. I know it may hurt your legs but do it for as long as it takes and dont losen, at all.

If you do that you are liable to win the prize for high flying.
If you want to win you need to be clever - throw carrots at the competition and dangle one in front of your donkey's nose.

Don't you watch cartoons???
To get a donkey to go EVERYONE knows that you tie a carrot to a piece of string & hang it from a long pole. Then you dangle the carrot in front of the donkey!

Thanks BB! Actually, our middle son wanted to try that once, so my husband let him. His horse stood looking at it like whoopee!!!

Just try watching your weight first, get it below 8 stone else you wont be allowed to ride - then no worries about whips!

i assume that's made out of leather-based. So, you could desire a leather-based balm for it and coat it properly, carry dry someplace and re-coat. as quickly as the leather-based is gentle, attempt to bathe it if that's grimy and re-coat with balm... i'm afraid to invite why you very own a whip? and does it comprise a chair?

think humane.... stick a carrott on a stick out in front of its nose and let him tear off after that! For sure you'll be first past the finishing pole!

you shouldnt need to use a crop at all on your "donkey" if he or she is well trained enough to respond to your voice or leg movements, a slight squeeze or tap with your heels should be good enough to get him/her going

You should never whip your animal becouse they could trun on you try doing clicking sound and use you hands to put little pressure on his hind end.
