Question:
Just for fun, have you ever met someone who was convinced?

That they're an amazing rider, when well really they aren't?

I've known plenty over the years, but this fella really takes the bicky! He had a brief stint as a jockey when he was young, brief.
He and considers himself to be a brilliant jockey, far from it, he's been called humpty dumpty on a horse, to give you an image he's constantly behind the movement, locks his hands and wedges his foot up to the heel of his boot into the stirrup, so no wonder he hasn't any balance.
You might forgive him only that he gloats about himself and well, he's a git.

So, know of anyone along those lines?

Thanks for the answers.

Many of them but, one was a little older man who professed to have ridden in many flat races. He palled up with a young man who had show jumpers and started to teach him how to show jump, not successful and if the older man rode one of the show jumpers it was hysterical to watch.

One day I was out exercising - riding one hunter (a big solid horse) and leading another. I was trotting along and approaching a dip in the road with an 'S' bend in it when I heard a horse galloping. The lie of the land meant that I could not see the horse coming towards me to start and then I saw a riderless coloured gypsy cob, charging down the road. I spread my two across the road and as the loose horse came around the corner and down hill, so he screeched to a halt. Then I realised that this 'jockey' was hanging on around the horses neck with the heel of his boot over the saddle.

It was the older man! I had to chuckle to myself at his face. It was as well that he had managed to hang on as he was no spring chicken and, a fall on the road would have done some serious damage.

Poor chap was as white as a sheet and declared that he had never been so fast in all his life!

The cob had spooked at a llama and he had half fallen off so, the horse took off from whence he had come with his rider hanging on for dear life.

I am afraid that I remarked that surely his cob was not as fast as all the racehorses he had ridden.

My friends grandma has a guy that stays at their house in exchange for taking care of the horses. Riding them, feeding, cleaning stalls, all that good stuff. He thinks he's like the worlds best rider, and even tells other people how they *need* to ride. For example, he told my friend (who has been riding since she was 4, and shes 19 now. Showed in some big shows and placed well. She's a very accomplished rider) that to improve her seat, she needed to lengthen her stirrups (to the point where her heels will be up to reach them), hunch over, and let everything be loose. Meaning flapping elbows, flapping knees, flappy everything. Then, haul on the horses mouth, and bounce around like a sack of potatoes, and you've got a great ride! *sarcasm*

I wish I had a video to show.

Edit-- I thought of another.

My boyfriends neighbor claims to be a horse trainer.. I think he's a freshman in high school. Not saying a freshman can't train a horse, I did it. But this kid... He is somethin else.

He was riding by one day, and his horse spooked at something in the yard. He instantly pulled the horse into a spin, kicking and yelling about how the horse was "crazy" and all this stuff... The horse just did one of the weird little sideways steps that horses do when they spook a little. Nothing to get too excited over. Then, finally he straightened the horse out, then kicked him into a straight gallop heading for home. Flopping all over with his elbows out and jerking the horses mouth the whole time.

He later came over and offered to "train" my boyfriends mare.. Who is already very well trained, thanks to my boyfriend and I.

YES!

There's a girl at my stable who thinks shes an amazing rider, when really shes horrible. She cant even do an out side line with out her horse refusing and her almost falling off. And its definitely not the horse, because almost every horse shes been on has done this to her. In fact at one show she ran her horse through a hay bale, while trying to do a course. And then when she decides its time to discipline her horse, she smacks it as hard as she possibly can on its head and face. And yet she thinks she has the right to go on about how bad a rider i am.

I was camping with a friend last year and her dad had brought along his horses. The one mare was a bit spirited and liked to prance, but was a great horse and a definate sweetie. One lady that was camping with our group asked if she could come along for a ride. My friend's dad agreed and saddled up the mare. This lady claimed she had been showing for a very long time and that her family had horses. She was probably in her late twenties, so we all assumed she must be a great rider.

Not ten minutes later, she rode back up to the campsite. Both she and the horse looked extremely pissed. She was getting too frustrated and the mare picked up on it and got nervous. From the saddle, she yelled to my friend and I "Can someone come over and hold this b****?" I walked over, calmed the mare down while the lady climbed down, all the while complaining about what a terrible mare she was.

I didn't think that was a very hospitable way to thank a total stranger for allowing you to borrow their horse.

I jumped on the mare...after all, she couldn't be that bad, right? I had the ride of my life. That mare was SUCH a sweetheart. And you better believe that I texted my friend, who was at the campsite with the other lady, how much fun I was having. Upon my arrival back to the campsite, I got the mare to stop quietly and properly, then exclaimed what a sweet mare she was. Of course, the lady told me that she was so used to geldings that she couldn't deal with a mare's temperament. I told her that I typically ride a gelding as well.

Yes. I've met several and know several. They think they are the best thing since sliced bread when they can barely ride. I don't like to brag about my riding skills, because I know I'm not the world's best rider and am always learning new things. But these girls.. They just have it in their mind that they are the best and everyone should bow down and make them Queen. One time, we'll call her "Sarah", was at a horse show, and I was showing to. We were in the same class (it was a mix class.) She placed higher than me. Sarah came up to me and said "Hey! I got first! What did YOU get?" I politely said "3rd." The next mixed class, I got 1st where she didn't even place. I just told her nicely that she did very good, even though she didn't place. She just glared at me and stormed off.

Some people, you just can't win for loosing.

Great question!

Thanks for the points! :D

Hahah, oh yes!

There is this girl up my stables who rushed into buying this horse that the owner was desperate to get rid of. It's like a REALLY easy horse, goes on the bit perfect, jumps perfect, and she thinks she's this AMAZING rider because she can ride it! Like, yeah I could get on and ride your horse, but you couldn't ride mine!

And then she rambles on about the amazing 4ft jumps she's done (it was no way 4 ft!) and preaches to everyone about how great her horse is when actually it's only great because it was trained by someone else.

Tooooo many people up my yard like that who ride these piss-easy school masters with no character or personality and then gloat about being such great riders!

Yes I have... she gets on my nerves so bad.... There's this girl who is 14 and she is always hanging off of horse's mouths and she slouches over like she has no spine LOL. She literally is always going around bragging about how she's an experienced rider, she's the best at our barn, etc. She tells people that she can break horses - but I definitely know she can't. She has a yearling at home and is riding it (yeah! Wow). God forbid someone actually listens to her and sends their horse to be trained by her.... they'll regret it.

My 'friend' (depends on her mood) had about 2 half hour lessons and had already started cantering. She thought she was the best rider ever because of it, very loudly boasting that even 'lara fillits' (lol) hadn't progressed that quickly. Anyway I invited her over for a ride after her 3rd lesson and the WHOLE ride she was boasting about how good she was. I was sick of it so to bring her down a peg or two i began SERIOUS horse talk like -

how are you finding diagonals?

what does your instructor say about your riding position?

what discipline are you planning to ride?

of corse she didnt know what on earth i was going on about xD the best bit tho was when she tried to jump a log (less than a foot) and fell into the mud :) aparently her saddle was too slippy. i cant imagin why, in fact just that morning i was in charge of polishing them.....hehehe <-- im evil!

she gave up riding a week after that....cant think y :D

No I do not know many people who ride horses. Just my friend and that is it.

I thought you were on about a different type of riding when I first read your question.

"That they're an amazing rider, when well really they aren't?

I've known plenty over the years, but this fella really takes the bicky! "

Lol very funny if you have a dirty mind like myself.

My friend started english, and we had a lesson together. Since I had been riding for a much longer time than her, I didn't get to jump very much and was forced to do beginner flat work so she didn't feel left out.

Then later that week, we were talking about horses when she says, "Don't you just hate it when you have to do a lesson with a beginner and then you don't get to do jumping or stuff because they can't?" I laughed, but did not tell her that that was what happened when I had the lesson with her.

We refer to those types as 9 month wonders.

They think they know more in 9 months than most of us have learned in years.

Sadly, they will never excel because their minds are closed and you will be trucking them to the local ER on more than one occasion.

I still have the last one stuck to my hip (5 years now), she still thinks she knows what I know, is constantly putting herself in dangerous situations.

She's had to be medi-vac'd out of here twice.

Thank God my state has an equine liability law that says she can't sue me, especially since it was her own horse both times that sent her to the hospital.
