Sometimes you can get reduced board, but rarely free board.

It's not a matter of should you or shouldn't you.
it depends on what agreement you can come up with, with the barn owner.
Just because you think you should get something from someone, doesn't mean it's right or going to happen or should happen.
There are barn owners who'd say, sure! Yes. Of course. then there are others who say no way. Others might compromise.
Find out with your barn owner. And think about what you would think would be fair trade.....
How many lessons? How much will your horse be used? Once a week? Every day? Will you be able to ride your horse? If the horse is outside....is it on grass pasture where it doesn't need to be fed? Or will your horse get hay anyway?
Talk to the barn owner and make a deal.

No... not free. Is your horse even beginner safe enough to be used in lessons? You should only get a reduced price, a little bit off every time he is used. And boarding outside won't change your price much. If you can't afford board you shouldn't be owning a horse.

Not free board, but free training. Talk to the trainer and let him/her know that you are having trouble maintaining with your horse financially. Outdoor board should be cheaper than indoor already and if you take lessons that should be free since he is being used in lessons.

That is very unlikely. Many places will give you a discount on board if your horse is used for lessons, but not free. If you can't afford him at the moment, why not ask the trainer if any students would like to part lease him so that the expense is shared.

not free, but a discount. lets say stall board is 300 a month. if you pasture board, it would be more like 200 - 250. if you let them use your horse in lessons it would be more like 100-150. i highly doubt any place would give you free board, its not economical. they would basically be paying for your horse to be there (they still have to feed your horse, they still need their paid staff, they still need to pay the trainer that's tacking up your horse), so yeah. i doubt you would get board free.

At my barn you do. If your horse is a lesson horse, no board and the trainer pays for the farrier too.

No, you would probably get part livery. Like the yard will feed the horse and shoe him/vet him. But it means they get to use him whatever hours they wish (or whatever you agree) and you don't get as much freedom. It's a good way to board if you can't afford full livery though. =]

I don't think so. You'll have to do a lot more to get free board.
Talk to the owner and see if you can work out a deal. :) good luck!

i think so. or maybe you can work something out like if you let them use him for lessons you just pay for his grain and offer to help out a few days a week. my trainer does that for a lot of us and I've looked into bringing my horse to school and mine and many other schools pay for farrier, vet, and board in exchange for letting them use the horse. just be careful at how often they're using him and that they're treating him well. and if you don't like a specific person riding him like a beginner with hard hands speak up.

i doubt it... you would probably get free lessons... if you need to board him/her, i would choose a cheaper stable and help out as much as you can... if you are experienced, i would look to see if they need any trainers... you could train people in exchange for some/all board

most barns around here pay owners 10$ per lesson for the use of the horse.

WEll if you 'Let' him be used in lessons then your 'letting him' its sort of volunteering though i do think they should knock of a chunck of it just to be fair. Good Luck!

Well that's bull. I wouldn't think so, unless they offer it. Everyone's starving for money now.
