im the same as you haha!:L ive always wanted to go to a classy barn but i cant at the minute,

i think black and white are the two main professional colours

for example i love to wear

white breeches..black chaps..black gilet / white polo shirt,

in my opinion classy is when everything matches well,

i would say buying a pair of leather chaps would make you look even more smarter but don't worry, just be YOU!

and if its a show yard, you should stock up on show shirts..white breeches..and maybe a black show jacket?

if your showing that is (:

Hi, I'm very self conscious too so I know what you mean. :p However I wouldn't be exactly the same as everyone else so maybe have some breeches or something that stand out a bit.

FOR YOU

Breeches - White, cream or beige

Boots - Long/short black boots. If they are short then some smart chaps.

Shirt - A smart polo riding shirt or a rugby type shirt.

Jumpers etc - Smart fleece or a waistcoat

Gloves to match your tack

FOR YOUR HORSE

You could trim him up a bit if he is a breed where it wouldn't look silly. Trim up his face, whiskers, heels. Pull his mane and tail etc.

You could get him some matching tack like for eg. a coloured/crystal browband and a colour matching numnah and boots. You could also co-ordinate these with your clothing. This will give you a chance to stand out and will also make you look very smart.

For schooling:

- breeches (beige, tan, black, or other dark colours)

- Top: depending on the weather

Just a solid coloured polo shirt (with collar) if its hot/warm out

If its cold out I wear a solid polo shirt with a long sleeved but still fairly thin (not wool or something really warm) sweater on top. Then a warmer black vest over that. You'll feel cold at first but once you start riding you'll probably want to take a layer off and the vest makes it super easy and fast to do that.

- Belt (probably dark brown)

- Leather half chaps (brown or black as long as they match your paddock boots. I tend to prefer black)

*as long as you stick to more neutral colours at first you can't really go wrong. Just make sure you don't wear anything baggy, and my trainer always wants our shirts tucked in, even the polo shirts so maybe do that first until you know what your trainer prefers. You'll see what the other clients wear and get more ideas :)

Have fun at your new barn! :D

here's what i have to say: first of all, horse people aren't classy. we're dirty and a bit crazy for hanging out with horses, and there's not really a way around that. if everyone at that barn is able to ride their horses in spotless breeches and are afraid to touch a pitchfork, then they aren't really horse people. i'm not trying to put down your new barn at all, because i think it will be a great experience for you to get a chance to get some experience with more "professional" barns and probably get into higher shows and such! i just don't think you should try and change your own style to fit in. if people look down on you for wearing regular barn clothes, then they need to realize that this is the horse world, and the only place we try and stay spotless is at shows where we're being judged. no one should judge you at home, and in my mind, the barn IS our home ;)

sorry if i kind of sounded rude in that paragraph, but it really bugs me when there are people who ride horses but aren't willing to do the dirty parts of it. in my opinion, you shouldn't waste your money on super fancy stuff when what you have does the job just fine. however, if you want to do shows soon too, then getting some nice stuff for shows could double as your regular riding stuff if you care that much about what other people think.

now, to answer your question, white or tan breeches are the most "classy." white is usually for dressage, but also show jumping sometimes. tan is usually a good color for at the barn. i always wear a pair of cheap tan breeches that i bought for twenty bucks in a consignment shop, but they look decent enough that i wear them for shows. i never wear a belt with them for my lessons, but i ride at a pretty "ratty old stable" with amazing people and horses ;)

tall boots or field boots are even classier than leather half chaps, or you can go for cheap black paddock boots and half chaps. a belt isn't completely necessary, but it does complete "the look." a show shirt is okay, especially if you actually need one for shows, but i'm pretty sure a solid color polo would do the job, if its navy, black, or white. navy and white look really good with tan breeches.

for your first lesson, even if you feel intimidated, don't be! just hold yourself with confidence and people will notice. don't be snobby, just be confident and yourself! my mom always says if you imagine yourself surrounded by red light, you will appear to be more powerful to others watching you. introduce yourself if you see riders your own age, and smile a lot and ask questions.

and, lastly, the word "noe" is actually spelled "K-N-O-W." ;)

I'd say the general accepted attire for a place like this would be beige/green-beige breeches, tall field boots (if you can't do that, then get smooth black leather half chaps and short black boots (not suede half chaps). Wear a polo shirt and belt when you ride, no need to ride in show shirt--polo shirts are fine for schooling, & gloves.

Also, get a nice microfiber helmet like a charles ownes: http://www.smartpakequine.com/ProductClass.aspx?productClassId=2415 or a IRH ATH SSV (more economical, looks great: http://www.smartpakequine.com/productclass.aspx?productClassid=6206. get the black on black

So, tall field boots or nice paddock boots with smooth, leather, black half-chaps, beige/greenbeigh breeches, belt (leather or ribbon), polo shirt (any nice/clean polo shirt will do, but joules is the popular brand http://equestrian.doversaddlery.com/search?p=KK&srid=S10%2d1&lbc=doversaddlery&ts=custom&pw=joules&uid=345395007&isort=score&view=list&ids=964468700&dmi%5foffer%5fcode=SITE&w=Joules%20Polo%20Shirts&rk=1) Personally, I'd go to american eagle and do a buy one get one 1/2 off on striped and plain polos.

That is all. Again, no show shirt is necessary--it will be weird for you to wear a show shirt...don't do it. Also, make sure that you put your hair in a pony tail and flip your head upside down while putting your helmet on. If your hair is long, flip pony tail upside down back over head and use a hairnet. then, put your helmet on. basically, no hair should be showing when your helmet is on.

that is it for getty snoot-i-tized...hehe. :D After you are there a bit, you can take in the style. Some might wear plaid breeches, contrast stich breeches, brown or black breeches too, etc., but a dark beige is a good great starting choice. Most will wear different color breeches and polos...tucked in with belt (buckle to side)--leather or ribbon belt is fine, tall boots or black paddock/johdpur boots with black leather chaps, black gloves, and a black whip/jump bat.

Have fun! Good luck! Don't be intimidated...have fun!

Edit, here is a good pic of "what to wear." Notice, no hair showing. Also, people wear their belt buckle to the left side (see pic) http://farmore.homestead.com/0424_SchoolingLeone_0961.jpg

If you are serious and its important to you, its not weird. If it helps you feel more comfortable at the new stable to dress up then go for it. On a daily basis I don't dress up much around the horses or to ride, but there is not really anyone around to see me at home :) I have a range of everyday jodhpurs in bright colours and more traditional and just wear t shirts/sweatshirts or singlet vests when its extra hot. When I go to show clinic or other group lessons I guess I dress up a bit more, wear a nice shirt, tucked in, with breeches and belt, so this us probably the type of style you are aiming for.

HELMET:

I have one like this as my everyday helmet

http://www.horsesrus.com.au/products/jodz-deluxe-safety-helmet.html.

BOOTS/CHAPS

- definitely leather half chaps, or tall boots, but I much prefer half chaps and they look very nice. My everyday wear is ariat paddock boots and chaps like these

http://www.ariat.com/products_detail.aspx?pcid=8&cid=1&scid=11&pid=844

More dressed up than suede chaps.

BREECHES.

- just nice quality, plain colours, tan, beige, cream, white, black, grey, hunter green. Or subtle patterns (like pinstripe or plaid, with suede patches) with a belt, leather to match whatever colour you boots are. Beige/tan, creme are a good basic pair to have though. I love my white breeches, but they are sooooo not practical. But the look pretty :)

SHIRT

- I would never wear a ratcatcher show shirt for everyday, Not comfortable! and would be too hot for about 80% of the year here. A nice, long sleeved or 3 quarter length sleeved, plain coloured, firm fitting shirt tucked in looks just as nice (go navy, grey, black or the like. I love the look of white breeches with a navy shirt. Or tan breeches with a black or navy shirt. Or casual show shirt like this

http://www.smartpakequine.com/productclass.aspx?productClassid=7481

Or a nice simple polo shirt, tucked in looks very nice for schooling and everyday.

EXTRAS

- gloves finish off the picture nicely.

- braid your hair and tuck under your helmet

Just some examples, simple but classic and nice looking

I would just not care. Wear tall boots if you have them, half chaps look unprofessional if you ask me. Leave your breeches if you like them, don't wear a belt if you don't usually wear belts. Don't waste your money on show shirts just wear some shirts that aren't flashy.

Real class comes from the inside out.

Yeah, nice clothes can make you LOOK sharp, but it won't make you classy.

You can have awesome clothes and be a complete classless person....

or you can wear decent clothes and show your class through your actions. THIS class...will seep through, regardless of what designer or nondesigner shirt you wear. Trust me. It's way more important and what people will like about you.

Real people don't remember clothes, they remember personality and charm.

Is this a fashion barn or do they actually teach riding? If I were you I would be my self not try to be someone else, or are you going to this barn just to show off, if so you probably should stay where you are because they6 will see through your disguise.

well if this is really that important than you i would suggest:

tall boots (especially if you jump)

tan breaches

one of those casual white show shirts

velvet helmet, not a plastic one

black riding gloves

You're probably going to take this the wrong way, but you really need to stop worrying about what other people think. Be yourself, if they can't accept you for who you are, they aren't worth your respect.

I'd start by spelling "know" correctly. Classy people love that (god, aren't they pretentious?)
