So what breed of horse would you recommend for skijoring (skiing behind a horse)? Also has anyone ever tried it or know where you can take lessons for it in the midwest?

Any horse could do it. It's just like ground driving but they're pulling you - you on skis could probably be pulled easily by a mini. The personality of the horse would be more important than it's breed.
When I was a teenager, I used to do this with my QH pony. I attached one long line to a homemade breast or neck collar to hang onto to be pulled, and another long line to the bit to steer with. I had the steering rein in one hand and the pulling rein in the other hand. It was lots of fun except if my horse made any sudden turns! The pictures I've since seen of skijoring have someone riding the horse that's pulling the skier, so that's probably a safer way to do it.
I don't know about taking lessons, but it's pretty much like waterskiing, or being pulled up a J-bar lift on snow skis.

Big boned Quarter horse, appaloosa, paint types...arabians and TB's might get too cold. I live in the midwest too and have wanted to try it so me and some friends played around in the backyard! It was super fun, but be sure you have a super good horse that won't freak at the sight or sound of the skis and you slidding along behind them. When the horse takes off keep your knees bent and you leaned back a little. Put pressure into your skis so they will move first and not your torso. Very painful to fall frontwards with skis!

What kind of stupid idea is that? Haven't you ever heard that the back of the horse is the most dangerous place? Why would you want to put yourself in that kind of danger?
Horses are for riding, showing, being pasture puffs, or just fun companions. Who ever came up with that "sport" was either really stupid or on an acid trip.

surley a quarter horse, pure or cross. Also an appendix or a mustang. They all are very strong good horses.
