Question:
Someone came out and chopped off my horse's super long mane?

I must be cursed.....

I almost passed out when I saw it, I valued his mane a lot. I don't know why someone do such a thing. He isn't a show horse by far, so its not sabotage. No one even knew my horses were back in those woods until the other day when they got out. I know it was cut and not ripped, because it was perfectly even, and I searched the pasture - no mane to be found. Could someone have cut it to make a show tail out of? Is it long enough? Here is how long it was(the upper half was on the other side. Messy, but I still loved it): http://www.flickr.com/photos/meagan_kay/3616948921/in/set-72157619609509940/

Here is it today:

They did a pretty sloppy job, leaving a few strands here and there - they were probably nervous and in a hurry.

So what do you think? Was it long enough they may have chopped it off to make a show tail? I think the only reason his actual tail is still there is because it is tangled into a "log". I still am working on getting it untangled, but he has never had it untangled in his life so it is pretty much a jungle.

Also has this ever happened to anyone else? Has someone cut your horses manes off?

Count your blessings-- sometimes people do far worse things to horses in fields. I won't even list them here, but they do. Still, it must make you sick, along with knowing that someone got that close to your horse with less than kind intentions. I wish I could offer words of comfort, but I don't know what to say-- it's just so darn miserable. Any chance you put a new horse out there with him? Maybe it chewed his mane off. That would feel better than thinking someone intentionally did it.

On the bright side, I think I'll wait before giving advice on the log tail-- you probably aren't feeling like making it long and pretty and loose right now, huh?

uuhmmm, wow, first of all you have a lot of trolls on here lol and second of all i would totally get freaked out if that happened to me. god knows what else those people COULD have or might have done to ur horse. thats just literally plain freaky. but anyways, it wasn't long enough to make a horse tail, but, as julie said, it could have been used for a paint brush or a braclet. i mean COME ON!!!! what were those people thinking!?! oh look!!! it's the horse from the fair!!! or loookkk mama!! it's a wild horsie with fences around it!! im going to go in the pen with it (when they don't know it's temperment) and cut some of it's mane off for my personal uses!! i mean, it's a good idea right? it won't be obvious at all!!!!

seriously, that's weird. that hasn't happened to me or anyone else i know. if you find out who it is, can't you sue them for like 200 or something? and i read ur other question about that little girl, but i don't think she did it, but i don't know her or anything so i can't say for sure....but was it that same horse that got out?

EDIT: you said something on the other question also about switching barns soon? that would be good because there seems to be too many problems

stolen saddles

horses getting out in a situation that could have been sooooo easy to avoid

some one cutting off your horses mane aka messing w/your horse

EDIT (again :) wow, all i can tell you is to loan some money or possibly replace some riding time w/some work time. the horse's saftey is more important than riding it. you can always start over w/the training again, but not with a horse's life.......

good luck!!!!

UGH!!! ANOTHER EDIT:::

i would also keep a close eye on him the next couple of days, they could have fed him soemthing bad

I think it's very strange someone did this!

I would put up some no tresspassing signs soon, just to give your horses a little protection.

As far as reasoning, I am clueless, it's not long enough to be used as a show tail and a mane, even as beautiful as your horses, wouldn't provide enough thickness (no one pays for a fake tail if it isn't thick or long like a tail). Some people make and sell braclets or jewelry out of hair like this at high prices?

Just a little advice, products like MTG can help grow manes and tails faster. Supplements made for hooves with lots of oils and proteins will help grow healthy coats and should speed up the growth of your horses mane.

Hope this helps, sorry to hear about this!

Good Luck

No, it does not look long enough for a show tail, and it was pretty tangled. Plus gray is not a popular color for show tails. (It doesn't shimmer like black.)

My guess is that some dumb kids cut it as a prank or someone wanted to braid a horsehair garrote or saddle tie off or other craft of some kind. You can use horsehair that long to do lots of things, and notice whoever did it only cut out the largest strands and did nothing to harm your horse.

Well, good news is mane grows fast. I cut my Brandy's mane back twice a year or she's be a shaggy cow. (But she's a working horse, not for show. And we have lots of goatheads here. ) Up the protein in his diet and it'll grow faster.

Sorry someone was such a jerk, and the mane was very pretty, but like any bad hair cut, it'll grow back.

yeah they could have cut it to make a tail. And yeah we have had that happen to our horses once. we had five at the time and some one went and shaved the tails and manes found out later they did it to make a whip to hang in a house for decor. some people are such idiots. We also found out we werent the only ones that this happened to.

as for the log. We use to have that problem, mom found that you can use a paring knife and cut out alot of it once it gets detangled if you do it this way you will cut out some hair but it will feel so much better to you.

cut like you would brush. not side ways.

we had to do it once a year. with all the burrdocks in the pastures.

Really sorry for your horses mane, but remember red sovines song

It ll grow back.

i don't understand plenty approximately western driving, yet I do have a paint, and he seems so plenty greater functional with an prolonged mane. the only suggestion i will furnish is pass to three smaller shows until now figuring out. Ask each and every of the judges their comments and notice in the event that they variety on your region. some areas do variety, yet in mine no western horse has an prolonged mane in any respect, particularly no count if that's 1 / 4 horse...if its 1 / 4 horse there is not any question. Ask others who compete on your region alongside with the judges and notice what comes out of it. in case you sense that this does not be properly worth it, pay interest to the putting interior the western instructions. in each and every teach you pass to, be conscious the precise 5 placings in each and every classification and notice if their manes might have had something to do with it. of direction, do not count quantity out their overall performance lol. and if each and every of the horses have short manes, i does not take opportunities. and btw...you dont ought to decrease the manes for english for those of you who reported so. truthfully, it doesnt count in case you could braid it superb. there are maximum of approaches to braid a mane so the choose in no way is familiar with the version, particularly no count if that's neat.

oh my gosh i would FREAK OUT!!! this is absolutely terrible can you call the police? i would file a report of someone trespassing. I installed surveillance cameras on my property because people kept sneaking and feeding my horses and riding them when i wasn't here. it was infuriating! if you cannot afford the full blown surveillance system go to radio shack and get the cameras that are fake with blinking lights. my neighbor has those (he wont admit it) but they look almost the same as mine. call the police this is trespassing this is terrible i am sooo sorry! oh and i have beware of dog, no tresspassing even a sign that has a handgun stating owners shoot first call 911 later and they still do it. (oh off subject but i have a kiger mustang who never had his hair brushed obviously wild horses dont but now that he lets me work on the log i use a regular human hair brush and oil like pink sheen for african american hair and it makes the job so much easier)

Sorry about your horses mane. I have seen this before, but it was the whole tail off of both of my friend's horses. She went out to the pasture to feed them in the morning and someone had cut off every bit! She reported it to the police as you should do, and they told her that it had happened several times lately in the area, not sure if they ever caught the guy. Unfortunately all you can really do for his mane is wait for it to grow back.

How many things have to happen before you get your horses out of there? Get a loan, borrow from relatives, or do whatever it takes to get the money to move them ASAP.

Edit: one more use for horse hair several inches long is fly tying (making lures for fly fishing). The lighter colors are preferable since they can be dyed bright colors. I have a friend who ties his own flies, and he actually bought some horse hair from Iceland that was supposed to be softer than normal. I think he probably overpaid, but who am I to judge, having my own expensive hobby?

That's not long enough to make a show tail, but horsehair has many other practical uses. That mane would be long enough to make the strings of an instrument or a paintbrush. Many of the highest quality artists' brushes are made from horsehair. So if it was stolen, it could've been used for that.

It really doesn't look cut to me. It looks rubbed off, and that's usually done by the horse.

I've had that happen to my horses seemingly overnight. They get an itch, they rub and rub and rub. I know that's what happened with mine, because I saw them rub and I saw the hair... and the next day it was just gone. I think animals/birds carried it off for lining dens/nests.

It seems so unlikely someone cut it so strangely. I think your the culprits are animal, not human, though.

I hope it was animals. The thought that some human did it... disturbing.

I have had this happen. There are people around us that do bead work and other crafts that use horse hair. If there are people near you that use horse hair, that is what I would suspect. They mainly like black, white and brown hair. I have had some with nice manes get cut up.

I would say that it isn't cut off at all, if it had been scissored there would be dead straight lines. I agree with Zephaniah that it looks very much as if he has rubbed it out.

I have had horses do this especially if there is a wire fence, they put their heads under the wire and just rub or it rubs out because they are grazing under the wire.

That happens alot when you live near ppl that do horsehair braiding and tack etc.

It was really popular with tails and you would walk out and find your animals tail chopped off.

I don't think its for a tail extension, my guess is your horses mane went for braiding purposes sorry.

Your handling it way better than I would of :)

You have alot of Trolls on here!

WOW, Anyways...

I cant believe that!!

Some parts looked as if they were rubbed off but others look as if someone really was in a rush and had to hurry.

IDK about the show tail thing BUT They may have.

It has NEVER happend to me EVER.

Maybe someone is trying to get back at you.

Are you arguing with someone right now?

Maybe Revenge?? But that still is really immature like WOW i cant even believe someone would do that.

If you find out who did it press charges,

1: They WERE tresspassing

2: They touched something that was not theirs.

IDK its retarded.

Well I hope you find out who did it, GOOD LUCK(:

do you have any other horses in there with him? we have two young geldings that love to play together and for some reason they love to chew on each other especially each others manes for some reason. when they really get chewed on they look like that*shrug* im just trying to think of another reason, because if someone hopped your fence and chopped at your horses mane. that's just all kinds of wrong.

That is absolutely disgusting. I don't know who would have the nerve to go up to a horse and take his hair, but if that had been my horse and I found the hair cut off, I would have cut them with their own scissors.

Sorry if that was violent, but mane takes time to grow back and I COMPLETELY understand your frustration. I work at a schooling barn and one of the school kids decided to take scissors to a horse's forelock and cut it straight across. He looked like he had a fan on his forehead. It was completely revolting - we can't show him for months.

I would clean your horse's mane - I know that traditional pulling is probably not your style but it may be the only way to make your horse's mane look neat and tidy before it can grow back. I hope you find out who did this to him.

Oh My God!! Who ever did this has mental problems or something. His hair was so pretty, I will grow back, but it will take a long time. My horse has thin hair right now too.

Oh my God!

It was so beautiful.

Did you ever go talk to that girl that rode him? Or did anyone you know go have a say? It could've been her. I would say, they just thought it was pretty, but you say no one knows about the horses. Are there any other neighbors with bordering property?

Who ever did this, has serious mental issues, and if you do find out who it is, you need to charge them. I myself, don't have a horse, or know anyone who does... but come'on, this is just ridiculous.
