I have a quarter horse that I show all-around. I'm looking for help on how to build a large wooden tack trunk. It can be tall or short. It needs to be pretty large; I need to store in it:
1 english saddle
1 western saddle
1 english pad
1 western pad
1 english bridle
1 western bridle
2 halters
miscellaneous grooming supplies

I would like to have this finished by July of 2013. Thanks!!

Hi Jordan, a girl at my barn has a super awesome tack trunk that her mom's boyfriend made for her. It doesn't matter if it is tall or short but it should be wide. You you should have two doors and inside something separating it in the middle. You should have two saddle racks one on each side. On one side you can put the western saddle on the rack and a shelf with the western saddle pad, on the other side, you can have the english saddle with the english saddle pad on the shelf. On one of the doors you should put your bridles on a bridle rack, and on the other door you should put your halters and crops. You should put all your grooming supplies in a grooming box/bag and on the floor. And have wheels on the bottom.

Hope I helped!

Google search different tack trunk designs. You can find many different styles and blueprints (you will have to pay for some).

I also hope you realise one of this size will be stationary or extremely heavy if you plan to fit two saddles in it. Also it will be very expensive. There is a reason nice wooden trunks cost hundreds of dollars.

I looked for a long time for tack trunk blueprints and didn't find anything that I wanted.

You know what I did that saved me a ton of time and money? I went to the Salvation Army and bought a used Entertainment center for $50. I put hooks and knobs in it, and it looked cool!

If you still wanted to add a hinge and a door, it wouldn't be hard to do.

Do you have any idea how much this tack trunk is going to weigh once fully loaded? Probably upwards of 300lbs. Do you have 2 VERY strong men to load this with you each time you go to a show?

Better to make 2 small trunks. You can google any tack trunk plans yourself. But I strongly suggest you purchase 2 of these instead:

There were so many woodworking plans with this collection and you will not believe this but there are over thousands plans in the one package deal. Go here https://tr.im/Fjx9a

This is really something to find that many all together. For someone like me who is just really starting to get involved with woodworking this was like letting me loose in a candy store and telling me I could have anything I wanted. That was my dream when I was a kid.

For two saddles, and other stuff, it's going to be huge. You'll need it to have a vertical form factor to get it through doorways. Personally, I think you'd be better off with two smaller boxes, instead of one large one. But you may want to look here for ideas:

Along with stone, mud and animal parts, wood was one of the first materials worked by early humans. Microwear analysis of the Mousterian stone tools used by the Neanderthals show that many were used to work wood. The development of civilization was closely tied to the development of increasingly greater degrees of skill in working these materials.
