There are so many choices, I am buying horse stuff, for i am going to be a new horse owner in the near future and I really don't know what brands are best. So what do you use? expensive? Who can i buy it from?(dover/smartpak/etc)
[I'd prefer if i can get it from dover or smartpak)

Also it'd be helpful if you also include best shampoo/conditioner/saddle cleaner/blanket and saddle pad washer. (really any advice on brands would be great =)

I love to use Ultra Fly Spray I think its made by absorbine. Its a little on the pricey side but its worth the money, the fly spray lasts for a long time, I also love it because I can use it on my self.

Tip- shop around, different companies have different prices, I don't order from Dover and Smartpak because their more on the expensive side. But sstack.com, or stateline tack and Jeffers Equine have good deals on everyday equipment.

For shampoo I just use Suave Shampoo, its cheap and it works really well. I use a white brightening shampoo on his blaze.

Blanket clean, I just sneak it into the laundry mat and use their washers. I usually use Tide.

That's my favorite kind. It repels the major insects (I forget which ones), sweat resistant, contains sunscreen, and lasts a good while. It's supposed to last 17 days, which it doesn't...but it is fairly long lasting. It's very hot where I live and we get a LOT of flies, and it works well for me. It's more expensive on dover than when I've bought it at co-ops.

As for the other things...I use baby shampoo from walmart. And I hardly ever use conditioner, not enough to buy any. I might just bring some from my house. I just brush with detangler that has conditioning stuff in it, and comb through with baby oil. I don't know about the best saddle soap. Washing blankets, I've washed them with woolite because it's the most gentle detergent. And I hang them up at the DIY car wash and do them because those hoses are so strong.

Are you absolutely looking for spray? I have the best luck with a wipe-on because you can get it everywhere and it lasts much longer. Everyone has luck with different products depending on where you live and what insects you are dealing with. It really can be a trial and error process.

The first thing to decide is whether or not you want a water or oil based product. Water based products can be easily sweated off and just to not last as long as an oil base. If you are looking for something more "natural" that smells nice, water based is likely what you'll find. I don't even mess with water based products but then again, I live in Minnesota and we have bugs like you would not believe.

When you are shopping, look on the label for the active ingredient, it is probably Permethrin or Pyritherin. Compare the percentages and get the one with the highest. You want to look for something that is both a repellent and an insecticide -to kill them!

Here are my favorite products:

Oh shampoo depends on a lot of things, what color is your horse? There are really a lot of good products out there that you won't need to look hard to find. A good brand is Extreme Design and there are many others.

Endure. If you buy from a feed/tack store, the prices are absurd. Shop the sites for horse supplies like www.jeffersequine.com or www.valleyvet.com and www.countrysupply.com. I usually by 4 gallons at a time for about $46 a gallon. In the stores, it is $20 a quart/$80 a gallon - a rip off. You don't have to pay those amounts. No tax if you are out of state and shipping costs will still make total cost way under retail.

for fly spray, i rotate between duraguard (orange bottle) and endure (black bottle with blue label). i get them from either tractor supply ( duraguard $16 endure $20) or jeffers (duragurard $14 endure $16 - plus shipping) you should be able to find both at dover.

shampoo/conditioner - i love cowboy magic products!! rosewater shampoo and conditioner works really well on my horses. gives great shine, and really cleans my grey. lather up the icky nasty tail, let it sit while i scrub the body, and rinse. it rinses clean, no static, can use with cold water or warm, helps repel the flies (in my opinion), it removes tough stains and my horses just gleam!! did i mention that my horses are out 24/7, and my grey looooves to roll? he's always a gross, stained mess. i get this at jeffers for $25 for a gallon (which lasts forever for with my 3 horses bathed at least monthly in the spring and summer) and the condition (i only use on mane and tail) is around $7. i have to admit. my son used all my shampoo, once, to give himself a bubble bath (never leave a 7 yr old unattended...lol), and i didn't feel like driving 45 min to town, so i used the rosewater shampoo and condition on me, once. it really is nice stuff!

as for washing your blankets, saddle pads, wraps, etc...i use either wool lite or dreft, and wash everything on the gentle cycle, then air dry. for really tough smells, etc, i add a bit of odo ban pet in the washer, it's antibacterial and SAFE. does a great job! i will highly suggest that you DO NOT use fabric softener! made for a real slippery ride!

because i don't show and don't have to detail my tack, i like to use Leather New. it's not an "all in one" product, but just soap. it does do a great job on my schooling and trail tack. i recently had a 50 + yr old western saddle given to me. i have to clean and oil it. i plan to see how the leather new does for this, then follow up with a good neatsfoot oil treatment. nice saddle, just needs a lot of tlc.

hope this will help you!

edit: you can google jeffers equine to get the link to their website. for some reason, the link won't attach for me!
