To start with clip the horse out and bath him using either an insecticidal shampoo or the best thing is to use an ivermectin based dip (these are sold for sheep but are ok to use as long as you rinse the horse off). If this doesn't work or you don't want to use a dip then you can get an injection from the vets which kills the mites. It's called dectomax (not sure off spelling). In the UK it isn't actually licensed for horses but is routinely given. My mare is very sensitive to mites and has a shot every 3 months or so and within a day or two she has stopped itching. This costs about £15 for the shot. Depending on your vet and your experience they may just give you the shot to administer yourself or will come out and do this for you. It works really well. It is very unlikely that you will be able to get rid of all mites completely from the environment as most horses carry some but what is important is to treat the stable as well as the horse as there will be mites in the bedding.

your vet should be able to give you a "bath" treatment along with treatment for ears, eyes and wherever else they may be. your vet may also give your horses an antibiotic shot. they should really be seen.

Worm them with an Ivermectin based wormer but not pure Ivermectin unless prescribed by a vet. There are also "pour on" Ivermectin treatments that can also be used as well.

Are you positive your pony has mites? I would get it diagnosed before doing any treatment. You didn't mention what your pony's symptoms are, but I can tell you from experience that a variety of things can cause a pony to itch, develop bald spots, get irritated skin, etc.

This winter my mini pony began to scratch furiously and actually rubbed parts of her winter coat almost bald! I did alot of research and can pass on what I learned. First, you should really find out if your pony has mites, lice, allergies, other parasites, rain rot or other skin dermatitis. Your vet can examine the pony, and take skin scrapings if he has doubts.

There are several types of lice. Some are visible under the mane, others live in the general body hair. If you spot lice then you can buy Louse Dusting powder from your vet. You will need to redust a few weeks later, and keep your pony away from others until the lice are under control.

Mites are not visible to the eye, that's why your vet will require a skin scrapping. They can be treated by giving Ivermectin wormer. Once again, I would ask my vet's advice as the pony probably will require two treatments of ivermectin before being cleared up.

If you do a search on the internet you can find alot of information on mites, lice, etc so once you know what you're dealing with you probably will be okay. I certainly would avoid using any really harsh chemical if there is a milder way to treat your pony!
